The famous English poet Byron is credited with the following words about Armenia: “Their country must forever remain the most interesting on the globe.” If Japan is called the Land of the Rising Sun, England — Foggy Albion, then in relation to Armenia you can often hear the phrase “land of stones”. This, I must say, accurately reflects the situation. Stones, both small in the form of individual placers and huge ones, represented by rocks and mountain ranges, can be seen almost everywhere. This is largely due to the fact that the country, as just mentioned, is mountainous. 87% of the territory is located at an altitude of 1000 to 3000 meters above sea level. A landscape in which one mountain range gives way to one, and then another, and so on all the way to the horizon, is very typical. An abundance of stones can also be seen in local buildings. Even in remote rural areas you are unlikely to find wooden houses. All buildings, including historical, religious and other monuments, are made of stone. The volcanic rocks that make up many Armenian rocks serve as an excellent material both for large houses and for the products of stone carvers, of which there are many in Armenia. By the way, according to Russians working in this country, Armenians are excellent builders. Natural beauty is usually represented by mountain landscapes, which, by the way, vary quite a lot depending on what part of the country you are in. For many Russians, and not only others, Armenia is associated primarily with the famous local cognac. Local residents love to talk about the biblical legend, according to which winemaking originated in Armenia. How much of this corresponds to reality will be left to the judgment of historians, but the fact that this country has the deepest traditions of winemaking is an indisputable fact. Its origin and development were facilitated by the unique microclimate of the Ararat Valley that still exists. Even two and a half millennia ago, historians mentioned that “fine wines come from Armenia.” Armenia is one of those places that provides the opportunity to experience the famous Caucasian hospitality.
